More Examples of the Worst Web Design

There are so many types of bad websites that it's hard to categorize them properly. Here are some classic examples.

Still Sucking After All These Years: 15 Years — 15 Websites Stuck In Suck

still sucking ater all these years

Most of the websites I featured in The Daily Sucker and in other articles took the hint and changed their design. Most of the changes were positive, but there were sites that didn't improve and went from one sucky design to the next.

Here are 15 websites that went from 1990's bad to 2010 bad. Since the original bad designs are gone, you'll need to click on the graphic to see an inline YouTube video of the original site. There are also links to the specific YouTube pages, to larger versions I'm hosting at SmugMug and to the site's current home page so you can see them in their current glory.

Sites include The Vatican, Richard Simmons, Brown University Grad School, Alberto-Culver, Memorex and Zippo

Ugliest / Worst Web Pages of the Decade

worst of the decade

I've gone through my hell-hole of bad web sites and picked out the 30 that I think typify the worst in web design. There are no subtleties here. The current biggest mistake in web design — not enough contrast between the text and the background — isn't featured prominently because it's generally a mistake that good-looking web sites make (like 50% of all the sites discussing good web design — noupe, are you listening?).

The Worst Web Page In The World

the worst web page in the world

You would think it would be easy to say which is the worst web page in the world. Well, bad web design is a lot like pornography — just when you think you've seen the worst page, along comes something worse.

The difference between the sites listed here and those found in Over-The-Top Websites is that the pages listed here belong to commercial businesses or educational institutions. Over-the-Top sites generally deal with philosophy, religion, politics, end times, etc., that are out of the mainstream.

"Over-the-Top" — An Industry With Sucky Web Sites

over the top websites

The definition of an "Over the Top" industry is just like the definition of pornography -- you know it when you see it. Over the Top sites generally deal with philosophy, religion, politics, end times, etc., but they're generally not mainstream.

Many of these sites have been included in "The Worst Web Site of 2005-8" or are contenders for Worst Web Site of 2009.

You can really learn from and be inspired by web sites that are featured on Web Pages That Suck — especially those from the late 90's.

At the very least, you can learn to take the other direction. More importantly, you'll feel good about your design skills because nobody ever looked at the examples on Web Pages That Suck and said, "I'm a horrible designer because I can't create these kinds of web sites."
