Vincent Flanders’ comments: Certainly one of the worst looking political websites I’ve seen. If it weren’t for the fact that he claims to have 13 3/4 years worth of education, I would write off the typos as just a symptom of an Over-the-top Web Site. The following screen shot not only shows the problem, but could also be used as the visual representation of irony:

The candidate’s support of “School violents” reminded me of Emily Litella.

Turns out, according to my commenters, that the person involved in this site is really Basil Marceaux Sr., instead of Zack Wamp.

I’ve heard of interesting campaign promises, but this one may be the best:

VOTE FOR ME AND IF I WIN I WILL IMMUNE YOU FROM ALL STATE CRIMES FOR THE REST OF YOU LIFE! (Except violating a citizen rights this would be a special punishment )

Submitter’s comments: It’s been a while since I’ve seen Mystery Meat Navigation used on a website, so I thought I’d send you this site. Honestly, I don’t see this much any more — see if you can find the navigation on this page (hint: it is next to the little graphic that says “Navigate” and has an arrow pointing to it. Even then, it takes a moment to realize what the heck is going on).

I was floored that I couldn’t just click what appeared to be the “Lunch” or “Dinner” graphics at the top. The music which plays when the page loads is also one of my biggest pet peeves.

Vincent Flanders’ comments: Whenever someone says to you,”There’s nothing wrong with using Mystery Meat Navigation,” send them to this site. I hereby revoke my Mystery Meat exemption to band, art, personal, music, et al. sites until such a time as site owners and designers become responsible citizens. If people see something stupid, they want it. This has got to stop.

Submitter’s comments: On a guitar newsgroup the topic of worst websites came up. Most of the examples were sites you’ve featured years ago (Yvette’s, Forever Forgiven, etc.) that people think “they’ve discovered.” One site that was new to me — and shouldn’t have been — is Ed Roman Guitars. It’s definitely Web Pages That Suck material.

Vincent Flanders’ comments: There’s nothing like a Las Vegas-style website belonging to a Las Vegas-based company. It certainly qualifies for my list of Over-The-Top Web Sites except this site isn’t about “philosophy, religion, politics, end times, etc.”

Yes, it’s a music site (which are normally exempt), but it’s a store that sells products. This site is a classic example of Mistake #6 from Biggest Mistakes in Web Design 1995-2015 — “Have you ever seen another web site? Really? Doesn’t look like it.“ I call this type of design the “I haven’t taken my antipsychotics in a while school of web design.”

Seriously, have the people at this company surfed the web?

I’m a cut-and-paste idiot – again

Submitter’s comments: My friend sent this to me when she was looking into the college. You would think with all the money they get from tuition they would be able to afford a web page that wasn’t made by an 11-year old boy.

Vincent Flanders’ comments: I could excuse the page if it were designed by an 11-year old. I should excuse it because it’s for an art school but, because some irresponsible dickhead doesn’t understand that flashing colors could cause seizures, I have to make it a Daily Sucker. Oh. The word “irresponsible” in the phrase “irresponsible dickhead” is an unnecessary modifier.

What in the hell was s/he thinking? Hopefully, outing them might cause the page to be changed.

Vincent Flanders’ comments: Vook “blends a well-written book, high-quality video and the power of the Internet into a single, complete story.” I like to think of it as a multimedia book. Vooks come in web-based and mobile-based (like for my iPad) versions. Unfortunately, you can’t buy one book and read it on two different platforms. You have to buy two different books. Duh.

What caught my interest was a blurb I read while on my iPad about a new “Vook” titled, Reckless Road: Guns N’ Roses And The Making Of Appetite For Destruction. The link took me to the iTunes store and here’s a screen shot from my iPad.

I decided to click the “Developer Web Site” button and was taken to Vook’s web page about the Guns and Roses vook. Notice where the arrows I inserted are pointing. I click the “View Trailer” button and here’s what I get. A message telling me that I need to upgrade my Flash player. Uh…where have you guys been? Don’t you know Steve Jobs won’t let Flash on the iPad? You folks need to detect the User Agent String and make sure the iPad gets an HTML 5 video. Since you were too lazy/stupid to figure this out, you probably won’t figure out the User Agent String, so I’ll just give it to you:

Vincent Flanders’ comments: I finally succumbed to the Borg. I bought an iPad. My initial reaction can be summed up in 3 words — “iPod Touch Plus.”

I used my PC to go out and look for iPad apps at iTunes (that statement should tell you something about the iPad). I found an interesting app called “reader” by dBelement. I was stunned to discover the home page is hard to read. Uh. IT’S HARD TO READ THE HOME PAGE OF A SITE PROMOTING A BOOK READER???????

That’s what AccessColor reported. Here’s a screen shot of the report. Over 93% of the text fails the W3C guidelines.

In case they change the home page, here’s a screen capture. My watermarks are so much brighter than the text that it’s difficult to find the text on the home page. I think there’s a point here.

The good news is the dBelement page looks great on the iPad because they created a special mobile version.
